ITEMS DISCUSSED
1. September Conference Planning
Mark gave a brief overview of the Vail Cascade Hotel & Club where the conference
will be held. He passed out a spreadsheet of meal costs and reviewed the costs.
There are no costs associated with room rentals, but there is a daily vendor
cost. We are anticipating 15 + - vendors and we will need to charge each vendor
$ 150 for registration.
2. Flood & Stormwater Committee News
Twenty one people attended the February 15th joint meeting. Two speakers gave
presentations on two projects: Udall project in Fort Collins and the Central
Platte Valley project in Denver. The next joint meeting is scheduled for June
27th and it will be a joint field trip to Rocky Flats. The group discussed maybe
there should only be one joint committee from here on due to lack of attendance
at meetings and the fact both committees are multi-purpose. The group decided to
keep two separate committees for the time being.
Mike G. indicated that the field trip bus costs between $ 220 - $ 330 depending
upon the number in the party.
Mike B. has found that golf in Vail Valley averages $ 95 / person. It was
decided that Mike should check around a little more to see if he can better this
cost.
Susan proposed a conference charge of $ 150 / person for any one of the three
organizations attending the conference, and $ 180 / person for non-members.
Those in attendance at today's meeting approved the conference per person
charges. Susan indicated that the conference brochure will be mailed out in
early May. She handed out a breakdown of last years conference costs and
reviewed them.
Brian currently has 19 responses to the Call for Papers. He handed out an
abstract of each submittal and the group discussed adding to or subtracting from
the current list.
Mark suggested that the conference could have a session for just mountain
communities. Maybe the conference brochure could include an insert for a special
mountain session. Susan, Brian, and Brad Anderson will put together some kind of
a mountain session. Maybe the mountain session could be held on the Friday
morning time slot.
Susan next discussed the need for a keynote speaker. She suggested David Neenan
who works for a design build firm in Fort Collins. David puts on "Thinking
Outside the Box" seminars all over the world. It was decided that Susan should
go ahead and reserve David Neenan for the conference keynote speaker position.
Currently there are no meal speakers nor meal entertainment. Maybe a local
speaker could talk on local flooding problems. Or maybe a local historian could
speak at one of the meals. Susan will contact the Vail town engineer, Greg Hall,
and discuss available people for meal speaking positions.
3. Community Benefit Program
Brian explained that three people are helping assemble all of the pieces for the
Community Benefit Program so he can then present it to the CASFM Board. At this
time Brian is waiting for the three people to provide him the materials they
have promised him. John P. suggested that flyers may be send out to communities
to see if the communities are interested in obtaining CASFM help.
4. April 12 Workshop
This will be a 1/2 day workshop on Approximate Floodplain Delineation and Quick
HEC-2. So far 28 people have signed up to attend. This workshop could hold up to
100 people.
5. Membership and Treasurer's Report
There are currently 178 paid members. In summary the CASFM organization
currently has $ 31.77 in the savings account and $ 10,452.74 in the checking
account.
6. New Items
Brian explained that Larry Lang and company are moving ahead on the Flood Task
Force in advance of this summers snow melt floods which may or may not occur.
Bill explained that a recent workshop in Denver blasted storm water and water
resource projects without having all of the facts that went into those projects.
He explained that one could make each and every project pretty, but pretty costs
more money and nobody wants to pay for pretty. Maybe a future CASFM conference
session should be held to discuss the topic of pretty projects, maintenance
issues, obtaining an end product that works. Citizens need to understand what
they are giving up in order to get a pretty project.
It was suggested that at the beginning of this years conference, someone
announce that different people will be presenting different opinions on various
subjects and caution everyone that these are just peoples opinions on the way to
do a particular project. Maybe a summary panel should be held near the end of
this years conference to discuss and bring out all of the issues, positions,
opinions, etc. Maybe we should invite someone to speak on "Conflict Resolution"
at the conference.
