Stormwater Quality Committee |
|
The Stormwater quality
committee has been quiet since the summer field trip. Thankfully there were
excellent water quality presentations at the conference, and many members have
been busy implementing stormwater quality programs for their clients, public and
private. We’re all learning ways to make a difference in the quality of the
wonderful watersheds in which we live work and play. Not to mention the runoff
from which many downstream from us use for a variety of things, like drinking.
Protecting people from floods and protecting water quality, you are some
important people.
How to do this important work better is what the stormwater quality committee is committed to exploring. This winter we will have a meeting to share information we have all gained in the past year. We will have an update on the City of Denver’s new water quality guidance document. Other items being considered for future meetings are TMDL’s (Total Maximum Daily Loads), West Nile Virus and proprietary BMP’s. TMDL’s look to be the next big thing driving BMP’s on watershed wide basis. Their link to stormwater runoff practices is something important for CASFM membership. West Nile Virus and the implication of stormwater BMP’s in the vector populations will become important again next spring. Many different BMP’s are being marketed and they probably include the good, the bad and the ugly. So come and join us for these topics and share your experiences with stormwater quality implementation on your projects, NPDES or not. We will meet at the offices of URS Corp., 8181 East Tufts Avenue, Denver, CO 8023 on January the 14th, for a lunch time meeting.
Another topic for stormwater quality committee is CASFM’s seat on the State Nonpoint Council. This council works with the state on its nonpoint source water quality program. One subcommittee of the NPS council is Urban and Construction. The state is beginning the process of re-writing the NPS management plan. A lot has happened since this was last done, including the Stormwater NPDES program. Taking urban stormwater runoff from the non-point program to the point source program creates a few institutional obstacles to coordination that with your help can be overcome. CASFM member involvement can help the NPS council create an effective management plan that works smoothly with the NPDES programs many of us are working on. You of course need to be involved. The next urban and construction meeting is on December 11, 9:00 am - noon at the Colorado Division of Wildlife 6060 Broadway. Contact Russ Clayshulte at RNC consulting, rclayshulte@earthlink.net for more information on this subcommittee. One last thing, please give me a call with comments about your interests or to offer help on the CASFM stormwater quality subcommittee (kmcbride@fcgov.com or (970) 224-6023).
