He is also working with ASCE on developing a Sustainable Projects Certification Program that will recognize improved performance of civil engineering projects in the natural environment. Mr. Binney supported AAEE in developing a professional sustainability practitioner certification program that will be available in 2010. Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Binney served as the Director of Aurora Water and was responsible for the development and delivery of the City's Prairie Waters Program. He has over 35 years of professional experience in the United States and internationally, and holds postgraduate degrees in civil engineering and in water resources.
Topic of Presentation:
Sustainability has become a guiding principle for many engineering projects, but the definition and description of what is being delivered have multiple and often abstract meanings to practicing engineers and owners. LEED has established widely recognized approaches to sustainable standards for occupied buildings. ASCE has identified at the Board level that delivering sustainable civil engineering projects is a strategic priority of the society and that there is a need to provide guidance and tools that allow the practicing engineer to better understand the approaches and expectations of a Sustainable Project. Mr Binney will describe the tools that are currently available or under development by ASCE and how they can be used to increase the value of the services that are being provided to clients, as well as the growth and professional development of careers related to Sustainable Planning and Engineering.
