SUMMARY:NeFSMA Kingsley Dam Tour and 2019 Western Nebraska Seminar
DESCRIPTION:https://www.casfm.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2019-NeFMSA-Western-NE-Seminar-Agenda.pdf \n  \nOn May 2-3 NeFSMA will having a tour of Kingsley Dam\, followed by speakers regarding issues related to the dam\, dam safety\, endangered species\, the Platte River Basin\, and more. \nThe NeFSMA professional development committee members are very excited about this event since you don’t normally get to tour a dam of this magnitude as part of a floodplain/stormwater organization.  The event has been set up so public officials in eastern NE can travel during the morning of a work day\, justify an overnight stay since we will have an evening program with CEC’s\, and travel home the afternoon of a 2nd day.   But it turns out Denver is actually closer to Ogallala than Lincoln (3 hours verses 4 hours) so works great for Colorado CASFM members to make the trip also! \nWe have been pre-approved for 7.5 CEC’s from ASFPM so is a great opportunity also for CFM’s to pick up quite a few hours if they can’t make one of your schedule events with CEC’s.  We can’t offer mountain views like you do at your annual convention (was at your Crested Butte conference in 2016 so know a little bit about your conference amenities)\, but can offer a big lake\, great tour and some floodplain/stormwater socializing.   We also attempted to have some less regional (Nebraska) presentations the next day so does not sound like an all Big Red event. \n  \nhttps://www.nefsma.com/event-3304934 \n

SUMMARY:2nd HEC-RAS 2D Modeling Course
DESCRIPTION:Because of popular demand\, CASFM arranged a 2nd HEC-RAS 2D Modeling Course  \nWhen: May 21st-May 23rd 8 am-4:30pm \nCLICK TO REGISTER \nCourse Description: WEST Consultant’s hands-on seminar and computer workshop provides practical training in two-dimensional modeling using HEC-RAS. Participants gain intensive experience constructing two-dimensional HEC-RAS models from scratch. This hands-on experience also highlights methods in which the one-dimensional components of HEC-RAS can be connected to two-dimensional meshes. Lectures on 2D flow theory\, an introduction to the new capabilities and features of HEC-RAS\, and procedures for creating a stable and calibrated 2D model will be covered. Workshops focus on giving students experience with building and pre-processing the computational mesh\, performing offline and inline 2D projects\, and using the built-in feature RAS Mapper to spatially analyze results. \n*Attendees should bring their own laptop with latest version of HEC-RAS* \nClick to View the HEC RAS 2D Modeling Course #2 Flyer

SUMMARY:UWRI - Hydrology Using HEC-HMS
DESCRIPTION:https://www.regonline.com/builder/site/Default.aspx?EventID=2551279 \n  \nCEU’s:\nYou will be eligible to receive 1.5 CEU’s or 15 PDH’s for this course.\nThis course is also eligible for 12 CECs towards ASFPM CFM Certification. \nWhat you will learn?\nIn this packed two-day class\, you will learn everything you need to know about the basics and how to use the HEC HMS software\, a powerful freeware developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. These will include\, among other topics the advantages and limitations of this model\, development of design storms\, HEC HMS runoff methodology\, use of thee Soils Conservation Service Method\, basics of unit hydrographs\, kinematic wave runoff modelling\, various methods of conveyance routing\, etc. This class will add more time to learn the computer model\, and increase hands on experience with the HMS model based on comments from the last course. \nMore specifically the following topics will be covered: \n1. Overview of HEC-HMS\na. History and capabilities\nb. Limitations and advantages\nc. Classification of hydrologic models\nd. Introduction to HMS Graphical User Interface\n2. How to Build a Basic HEC HMS model\na. Students will build a Basic Runoff Model from Scratch\n3. Workshop:\na. Basin delineation\nb. Rainfall development\nc. Build Basic HMS model\n4. Components of a Hydrologic Model\na. Soils Conservation Service Method\no Volumetric Losses from the Curve Number Method\no Initial Abstractions\no Rainfall Distributions\no SCS UH Procedure\nb. Modeling Direct Runoff with HMS\no Basic Concepts of the Unit Hydrograph\no User specific Unit Hydrograph\no Snyder Unit Hydrograph\no Clark’s Unit Hydrograph\no Kinematic Wave Model\n5. Workshop: Build and Develop a complete HMS model using\nthe SCS Procedure (Till end of class day)\n6. Channel Hydraulic Modeling within HMS\na. Modified Puls\nb. Kinematic Wave\nc. Muskingum\nd. Lag\ne. Muskingum-Cunge\n7. Workshop: Develop a complete rainfall runoff model with\nSnyder Unit Hydrograph\, Pond\, and Channel Routing.\n8. HMS Calibration Procedures: Run optimization model\nwithin HMS from workshop model and calibrate to a gage. \nComputers: Bring your own with the HEC HMS software installed. The HEC-HMS software may be downloaded from:\nhttp://www.hec.usace.army.mil/software/hec-hms/downloads.aspx \nFaculty:\nGerald Blackler\, PE\, PhD has focused his academic and professional career in hydrology and water resources engineering. He has used advanced methods in HEC-HMS models for a variety of projects across the US that range from large burn areas in New Mexico to drainage from coal mines in West Virginia. He has worked on hydrologic and hydraulic projects across the US for the National Park Service\, National Forest Service\, the Federal Highway Administration\, and many other public and private clients. \nDavid Williams\, PE\, PhD\, CFM\, CPESC\, PH has over 46 years of experience working in water resources and is an expert user and instructor for many US Army Corps of Engineers software packages including HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS. David is a lead instructor for a wide range of course for American Society of Civil Engineers and instructs beginning and advanced HEC-HMS courses\, geomorphology of streams\, advanced courses in hydraulic modeling with HEC-RAS and many other courses around the United States. He is a professional hydrologist (PH)\, and is on the executive board of the American Institute of Hydrology. \nColorado is a great place to visit in May!\nThis class will be held during a wonderful time of the year in Colorado! If you would like to stay close to or in the city of Denver\, Larimer Square is a fun area to grab a bite to eat and enjoy a little shopping. There are also a few extra exciting events happening in May; The musical Wicked will be live at the Buell Theatre until June 9th! Our fabulous Rockies will also be playing at Coors Field from May 24th to June 2nd. If you would like to venture outside of the city\, Red Rocks scenic hiking trails offer a thrilling workout. And at night\, Red Rocks is a stunning venue where you can enjoy concerts or films while outdoors. So\, if you come and attend this class\, you may want to extend your stay (or even come early) and take advantage of the most attractive area of the United States.
