SUMMARY:NeFSMA Kingsley Dam Tour and 2019 Western Nebraska Seminar
DESCRIPTION:https://www.casfm.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2019-NeFMSA-Western-NE-Seminar-Agenda.pdf \n  \nOn May 2-3 NeFSMA will having a tour of Kingsley Dam\, followed by speakers regarding issues related to the dam\, dam safety\, endangered species\, the Platte River Basin\, and more. \nThe NeFSMA professional development committee members are very excited about this event since you don’t normally get to tour a dam of this magnitude as part of a floodplain/stormwater organization.  The event has been set up so public officials in eastern NE can travel during the morning of a work day\, justify an overnight stay since we will have an evening program with CEC’s\, and travel home the afternoon of a 2nd day.   But it turns out Denver is actually closer to Ogallala than Lincoln (3 hours verses 4 hours) so works great for Colorado CASFM members to make the trip also! \nWe have been pre-approved for 7.5 CEC’s from ASFPM so is a great opportunity also for CFM’s to pick up quite a few hours if they can’t make one of your schedule events with CEC’s.  We can’t offer mountain views like you do at your annual convention (was at your Crested Butte conference in 2016 so know a little bit about your conference amenities)\, but can offer a big lake\, great tour and some floodplain/stormwater socializing.   We also attempted to have some less regional (Nebraska) presentations the next day so does not sound like an all Big Red event. \n  \nhttps://www.nefsma.com/event-3304934 \n

SUMMARY:UWRI - Stormwater Detention Systems
DESCRIPTION:https://www.regonline.com/builder/site/Default.aspx?EventID=2549055 \n  \nCEU’s: You will be eligible to receive 1.5 CEU’s or 15 PDH’s for this course.\nYou will receive 12 ASFPM Core CEC’s toward CFM certification. \nWhat Will You Learn? \nStormwater detention has been identified to be very effective means to mitigate the effects on stormwater runoff and flooding due to urbanization of watersheds. It is a very important part of urban stormwater systems and is critical in protection to public provided beyond those offered by BMP and LID facilities. In this course you will learn: \n1) Assessment of urbanization impact on increase\nof runoff rates and volumes\n2) Types of stormwater detention\,\n3) Hydrograph method for estimating detention volume\nfor large watersheds\n4) FAA method for estimating detention volume for\nsmall watersheds\n5) Empirical methods for Excess Urban Runoff Volume (EURV)\,\nWater Quality Capture Volume (WQCV) and 10-yr and 100-yr\ndetention volumes\n6) Detention basin’s pre-sizing for multiple flood events\n7) Detention basin’s pre-shaping to produce\nthe stage-storage curve\n8) Design of inflow system using a forebay and inflow\nchannel for in-stream basin\n9) Design of inflow system using a culvert-diversion\nstructure for off-stream basin\n10) Design of outflow structure with WQCV plate\,\nlow-flow orifice\, and high-flow grate\,\n11) Design of outfall culvert using restricted plate to\nproduce the stage-outflow curve\n12) Design of basins operated by HGL using equalizer\npipes and flood gates\n13) Reservoir routing method to evaluate basin’s\nperformance\n14) Design of micropool in front of the WQCV plate\n15) Design of Full Spectrum Detention (FSD)\n16) Application and impact of watershed-wide regional FSD\n17) Design-storm modeling versus continuous simulation\nof detention basins\n18) Effect of location in watershed on detention\nbasin effectiveness\n19) Maintenance of detention basins and\nvarious design components\n20) Design and Review examples using\nUDFCD’s UD-Detention workbook tool \nThis Course Will Cover:\nThe lectures and work sessions are designed to teach how to design a stormwater detention system. You will be provided with a easy to use\, spreadsheet based computer model Stormwater Detention Design that was specifically developed for you to:\n1) Calculate the required storm water detention volumes\,\nincluding ones for Water Quality Capture Volume\,\nExcess Urban Runoff Volume\, 10-yr and 100-yr storms\n2) Estimate the basin geometry using triangular\, rectangular\,\nor elliptical shapes\,\n3) Develop the final stage-storage-outflow relationships\, and\n4) Conduct reservoir routing through the basin under design.\nDetentions and BMP outlet structures can be very complicated and can contain of multiple orifices\, weirs\, perforated plates\, and culverts. \nMuch of the class will be in workshop mode\, in which you will experience hands-on operations and how to achieve various stormwater and flood mitigation using detention design techniques. Stormwater Detention Design Software’s design procedures used fully comply with proven hydraulic design protocols applicable in all areas of United States and the rest of the world. You will also learn how to use spreadsheet-based freeware developed by the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District to size detention volumes and outlets. \nBring Your Own Computer.\nYou will need it to run the Excel workbooks provided to you in the class. \nFaculty:\nDr. James C.Y. Guo\, PhD\, P.E. is a professor at University of Colorado Denver. In addition to teaching engineering hydrology and hydraulics since 1982\, he is active in applied research and is a practicing engineer. Dr. Guo’s research work has been referenced in number of Federal\, State\, and City and County drainage manuals in United States and in several refereed journals as well. He also brings to the class the latest concepts and methods for stormwater detention designs and modeling techniques for outlet structure sizing and analyses. \nHolly Piza\, P.E.\, is a Project Manager at the Urban Drainage & Flood Control District\, serving the Denver\, Colorado metropolitan area. Ms. Piza managed the development of the current version of the UD-DETENTION reservoir-routing model. She has also managed the criteria\, standards\, and stormwater quality research and technology development program at the District since 2009. \nColorado is a great place to visit!\nApril is a beautiful time to visit Colorado. SUMMARY:UWRI - Floodplain Delineation using 2D HEC RAS
DESCRIPTION:https://www.regonline.com/builder/site/Default.aspx?EventID=2548452 \nCEU’s: You will be eligible to receive 1.5 CEU’s or 15 PDH’s for this course.\nYou will receive 12 ASFPM Core CEC’s toward CFM certification. \nWhat Will You Learn? \nThis is a two-day workshop that will focus on the basic knowledge and applications of two dimensional (2D) flood inundation modeling using the new version of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers HEC-RAS 5.0. The new HEC-RAS 5.0 has been significantly improved and includes new abilities. One of them is to perform two‐dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic flow routing. Now\, users can perform one‐dimensional (1D) and 2D unsteady‐flow modeling\, as well as combined 1D and 2D routing. Students will learn the basic theory and knowledge of 2D unsteady flow modeling and common applications. The class exercises will be practically carried out by creating a 2D HEC-RAS model and delineating flood inundation extents. Every class exercise will be performed based on working through each key element step-by-step. The subjects that will be covered in this course are: \n1) Basic theory and knowledge of unsteady flow hydraulics.\n2) Understanding of basic 2D flood hydraulic modeling and application.\n3) Introduction of HEC-RAS 5.0.\n4) Create and run your first 2D HEC-RAS step by step.\n5) Considerations and limitations of developing a 2D HEC-RAS model.\n6) Combined HEC-RAS 1D and 2D routing.\n7) Inline and lateral Structures with 2D flood routing.\n8) How to stabilize and optimize the computation results.\n9) Exporting modeling results.\n10) Flood inundation extents delineation using RAS Mapper.\n11) Modeling errors and troubleshooting. \nWorkshops will include creating a terrain model and computational mesh using RAS Mapper\, setting up the initial boundary conditions\, adding structures\, stabilizing an unsteady flow model\, and exporting computation results and mapping. This workshop is suitable for engineers\, technicians and current HEC-RAS users responsible for flood inundation delineation and unsteady flow modeling. \nFaculty:\nDr. Max Shih\, PhD\, P.E.\, CFM is a technical lead for water resources engineering and sediment transport projects at CDM Smith. He has more than 20 years of experience in H&H analyses\, specifically providing flood inundation mapping for frequency floods and dam breach floods and spatially variable watershed hydrologic and sediment erosion modeling. Dr. Shih has conducted many 2D/3D flow hydraulic and sediment transport modeling projects using HEC-RAS 5.0/2D\, TABS-2\, SMS\, SRH2D\, XPSWMM 2D\, FLO-2D\, CASC2D\, GSTARS\, and FLOW-3D programs. More than hundreds of people have taken the HEC-RAS 2D training class taught by Dr. Shih since 2015. Dr. Shih will share his years of experience and lead the class through practical 2D flood hydraulic modeling exercises. \nRyan Byrne\, P.E.\, CFM is a Senior Project Engineer at Martin/Martin Inc. providing water resources support for public and private projects across the Denver Metro area. He has more than 11 years of experience performing computational hydrologic and hydraulic analysis for flood control and floodplain mapping. He has extensive experience with spatial watershed analysis for both small and large scale studies both within and outside of the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District and Denver Metropolitan area. He will provide course support related to the HEC-RAS and 2D flow modeling exercises from a perspective of a long-term practitioner. \nColorado is a great place to visit!\nColorado is a great place to visit in March. March is still ski season! Hit the slopes at some of our fun resorts in Breckenridge\, Aspen\, Vail\, Beaver Creek and many more. If you’re looking for a mixture of mountains and relaxation\, check out the Strawberry Park Hot Springs in Steamboat or the Indian Hot Springs in Idaho Springs. Would you rather stay close to or in the city of Denver? Larimer Square has several fun boutiques for you (and even your pets)! SUMMARY:G194: Preparing For Post-Disaster Responsibilities Course
DESCRIPTION:Description: This course is designed to familiarize the participants with the elements of pre-disaster planning needed to prepare for substantial damage operations. Substantial damage applies to a structure in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) – or 1-percent-annual-chance floodplain – for which the total cost of repairs is 50 percent or more of the structure’s market value before the disaster occurred\, regardless of the cause of damage.\nCourse topics include: Identifying partners and resources; creating post-disaster standard operating procedures (SOPs); outline steps that should take place post-disaster to carry out substantial damage assessments; describe possible methods to obtain compliance with substantial damage determinations; and review possible sources of funding that can assist with post-disaster substantial losses. This course has in-depth discussion of the topics and exercises to help floodplain managers prepare for post-disaster activities. \nTarget Audience: Local floodplain managers and other local officials with the responsibility of completing damage assessments (assessor’s office\, public works\, building inspectors\, planners\, etc.) are strongly encouraged to attend. Emergency managers and recovery staff would also benefit. \nRegister: Registration will be through https://www.train.org/colorado/. Course ID # 1079686.\nFor help with CO.Train registration\, contact cdps_dhsem_training@state.co.us. \nDate\, Time & Location: January 15th\, 8:00am – 5:00pm. Lunch will be on your own.\nJefferson County Campus\, 800 Jefferson County Pkwy\, Dakota Building\, Golden\, CO 80401
