SUMMARY:CASFM NE Region Networking and Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:What:  CASFM NE Region Networking and Speaker Series \nWhen: Tuesday\, July 31\, 2018 – 5:30pm to 7:30pm \nWhere:  CB & Potts – Collindale Golf Course\n             1441 E Horsetooth Rd\nFt. Collins\, CO 80525 \nPresentation:    Not in Our Lifetime – The Boulder County Flood of 2013\n                         David Hollingsworth – Former Floodplain Manager\, City of Longmont \nThe 2013 Boulder County Flood is one of the largest floods in the history of Colorado with over 17 inches of rain in 4 days. The City of Longmont was located at the center of this flood. Longmont had 5 creeks at or above flood stage. The City spent 20 years constructing channel improvements including 3 large projects in the 3 years prior to the flood. These 3 projects saved over $60 million of potential damages. This presentation documents these projects and how they affected the extent of the flooding with photos and overhead videos. It also shows the power and unconventional nature of water as it determines its own path during the storm and the work to put the stormwater back into the channel to end the flood.  Flood videos and photos will be included. \nAppetizers provided. \nPlease RSVP to Andrew Fisher by July 24 to ensure we have an appropriate amount of food: andrew.fisher@greeleygov.com.  \nAgenda: \n5:30-6:00   Appetizers and Networking\n6:00-7:00   Presentation\n7:00-7:30   Networking

SUMMARY:1-Day Leadership & Collaboration Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Lead by Employers Council\, this leadership and collaboration workshop focuses on catalyzing creativity\, trust\, productivity\, and satisfaction by building more effective and collaborative work environments. The session\, building on the teachings of Radical Collaboration\, teaches five essential skills for building strong alignments. This fast paced\, hands-on learning experience increases trust and problem solving and reduces costly defensive behaviors. If you want your team to talk more openly\, resolve conflicts more effectively\, and be more productive\, this workshop is for you. \nAttendees will be provided with a handbook of program content\, lessons\, and implementation ideas. \nLearning Outcomes:\n1. Build collaborative skills\n2. Recognize the elements of building and maintaining trusting climates\n3. Develop skills establishing and solidifying partnerships and alliances\n4. Learn the dynamics of interpersonal relationships \nCommendations for the Course: \n“The Urban Drainage and Flood Control District utilizes the Employers Council for professional growth and development training. Through our Leadership Academy\, we covered the Radical Collaboration course\, which has been instrumental in not only helping us to break down the silos within our organization but also in more effectively leading teams comprised of people with varying backgrounds\, experience\, and expertise. Understanding how to read and respond to different behaviors\, mastering interpersonal relationships\, and building trust within teams are soft skills that are so important in our industry but often neglected in the education engineers receive. Blending those soft skills with technical expertise is a great way to develop individuals and\, in turn\, produce better functioning and more productive teams. We have been impressed with the quality of training provided by Employers Council and continue to use them as we grow as an organization.” Shea Thomas\, Urban Drainage and Flood Control District \n“The Employers Council instructors are awesome!” David Skuodas\, UDFCD \n$90 before June 29\n$125 after June 29 \nClick here to see the flyer \nClick here to register \nREGISTRATION IS LIMITED TO 25

SUMMARY:NHI - Stream Stability and Scour at Highway Bridges
DESCRIPTION:TRAINING LEVEL: Intermediate \nCLASS SIZE: Minimum: 20 Maximum: 30 \n\n\nCOURSE DESCRIPTION: \nThe National Highway Institute’s (NHI) 3-day Stream Stability and Scour at Highway Bridges course provides participants with comprehensive training in the prevention of hydraulic-related bridge failures. Course participants will receive training in conducting a stream stability classification and qualitative analysis of stream response and make estimates of scour at a bridge opening. \nMaterial for the course comes primarily from two Hydraulic Engineering Circulars (HEC)\, “Evaluating Scour at Bridges” (HEC-18)\, 5th Edition (2012)\, and “Stream Stability at Highway Structures” (HEC-20)\, 4th Edition (2012). The effects of stream instability\, scour\, erosion\, and stream aggradation and degradation are covered. Quantitative techniques are provided for estimating long-term degradation and for calculating the magnitude of contraction scour in a bridge opening. Procedures for estimating local scour at bridge piers and abutments for simple and complex substructures are also provided. A comprehensive workshop integrates qualitative analysis and analytical techniques to determine the need for a Scour Plan of Action for correcting stream instability and scour problems. For this 3-day course\, the host agency will need to select 3 optional topics (out of 8 possible topics). Course instructors will contact the host prior to the course to complete a pre-course questionnaire\, determine optional topics to be taught\, and discuss the course schedule. \nThis comprehensive training provides preventive techniques for identifying\, analyzing\, and calculating various hydraulic factors that impact bridge stability. Public and private sector engineers responsible for maintaining the integrity of highway bridges will find it invaluable. \nPrior to the beginning of the course\, participants are strongly encouraged to enroll in the following Web-based training (WBT) courses: 135091 Basic Hydraulic Principles Review\, 135086 Stream Stability Factors and Concepts\, and 135087 Scour at Highway Bridges: Concepts and Definitions. Mastery of the concepts covered in these WBTs will enhance participation in the Instructor-led training. \n\n\nOUTCOMES: \nUpon completion of the course\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify indicators of stream instability that can threaten bridges\nIdentify stream types and their potential for instability problems\nDescribe open-channel hydraulics concepts in bridge scour and stream instability analyses\nDefine types of scour that can occur at bridge crossings\nDescribe aggradation\, degradation\, and contraction scour\nCalculate contraction scour for live bed and clear water conditions\nDescribe factors that influence scour at piers\nCalculate pier scour for three typical case studies\nDescribe the factors that influence scour at abutments\nDescribe how HEC-18\, HEC-20\, and HEC-23 provide analysis procedures for stream instability and bridge scour\nPerform Level I and II analyses\nClassify a stream using two different classification systems\nConduct a qualitative analysis of stream responses\nApply the HEC-18 scour equations to determine total scour at a bridge\nDetermine the need for a Scour Plan of Action at a scour-critical bridge

SUMMARY:CASFM Lunch 'n' Learn
DESCRIPTION:An integrated Decision Support Tool (i-DST) for life-cycle cost assessment and optimization of green\, grey\, and hybrid stormwater infrastructure \nThe goal of the project is to develop an integrated decision support tool\, called i-DST\, for prioritizing potential grey and green stormwater infrastructure projects.  Decision support tools such as this are needed by municipalities crafting stormwater management plans to meet diverse objectives\, while simultaneous minimizing economic costs.  The primary objectives of these management plans are flood control and water quality permit compliance.  However\, there are many other outcomes of stormwater infrastructure that can be considered\, such as life cycle environmental impacts (e.g.\, greenhouse gas releases) and additional benefits to the community provided by the infrastructure (e.g.\, urban green space\, air temperature regulation).  The i-DST is a software tool that is being developed with routines to quantify how different stormwater infrastructure scenarios are able to meet these competing objectives.  Some components of the module include a hydrology and water model\, life cycle cost estimation\, a life cycle assessment to compute environmental impact\, and the quantification of other community benefits. The use of regional defaults values of infrastructure costs\, materials\, and performance allow for application of the tool across the nation. \nSpeaker: \nColin Bell is a postdoctoral researcher at the Colorado School of Mines in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.  His educational history includes a BS from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry\, an MSE from UNC Charlotte\, and a PhD from Purdue University.  Colin has focused research efforts on monitoring and modeling hydro-ecological processes of urban environments.  Specifically\, focus has been paid to exploring how stormwater management strategies effect stream hydrology\, water quality\, and ecosystem function.  In addition to this primary research\, Colin has worked to build decision support tools for both urban water managers and residents looking to minimize negative impacts of urban water runoff. \nTo register for this event: https://casfm.swoogo.com/lnl20180502 \nRegistration is $10. \nRegistration deadline is Monday\, April 30 at 5PM \nContact Holly Piza with any questions.
