CEU’s: You will be eligible to receive 1.5 CEU’s or 15 PDH’s for this course.
You will receive 12 ASFPM Core CEC’s toward CFM certification.

What Will You Learn?

This is a two-day workshop that will focus on the basic knowledge and applications of two dimensional (2D) flood inundation modeling using the new version of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers HEC-RAS 5.0. The new HEC-RAS 5.0 has been significantly improved and includes new abilities. One of them is to perform two‐dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic flow routing. Now, users can perform one‐dimensional (1D) and 2D unsteady‐flow modeling, as well as combined 1D and 2D routing. Students will learn the basic theory and knowledge of 2D unsteady flow modeling and common applications. The class exercises will be practically carried out by creating a 2D HEC-RAS model and delineating flood inundation extents. Every class exercise will be performed based on working through each key element step-by-step. The subjects that will be covered in this course are:

1) Basic theory and knowledge of unsteady flow hydraulics.
2) Understanding of basic 2D flood hydraulic modeling and application.
3) Introduction of HEC-RAS 5.0.
4) Create and run your first 2D HEC-RAS step by step.
5) Considerations and limitations of developing a 2D HEC-RAS model.
6) Combined HEC-RAS 1D and 2D routing.
7) Inline and lateral Structures with 2D flood routing.
8) How to stabilize and optimize the computation results.
9) Exporting modeling results.
10) Flood inundation extents delineation using RAS Mapper.
11) Modeling errors and troubleshooting.

Workshops will include creating a terrain model and computational mesh using RAS Mapper, setting up the initial boundary conditions, adding structures, stabilizing an unsteady flow model, and exporting computation results and mapping. This workshop is suitable for engineers, technicians and current HEC-RAS users responsible for flood inundation delineation and unsteady flow modeling.

Faculty:
Dr. Max Shih, PhD, P.E., CFM is a technical lead for water resources engineering and sediment transport projects at CDM Smith. He has more than 20 years of experience in H&H analyses, specifically providing flood inundation mapping for frequency floods and dam breach floods and spatially variable watershed hydrologic and sediment erosion modeling. Dr. Shih has conducted many 2D/3D flow hydraulic and sediment transport modeling projects using HEC-RAS 5.0/2D, TABS-2, SMS, SRH2D, XPSWMM 2D, FLO-2D, CASC2D, GSTARS, and FLOW-3D programs. More than hundreds of people have taken the HEC-RAS 2D training class taught by Dr. Shih since 2015. Dr. Shih will share his years of experience and lead the class through practical 2D flood hydraulic modeling exercises.

Ryan Byrne, P.E., CFM is a Senior Project Engineer at Martin/Martin Inc. providing water resources support for public and private projects across the Denver Metro area. He has more than 11 years of experience performing computational hydrologic and hydraulic analysis for flood control and floodplain mapping. He has extensive experience with spatial watershed analysis for both small and large scale studies both within and outside of the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District and Denver Metropolitan area. He will provide course support related to the HEC-RAS and 2D flow modeling exercises from a perspective of a long-term practitioner.

Colorado is a great place to visit!
Colorado is a great place to visit in March. March is still ski season! Hit the slopes at some of our fun resorts in Breckenridge, Aspen, Vail, Beaver Creek and many more. If you’re looking for a mixture of mountains and relaxation, check out the Strawberry Park Hot Springs in Steamboat or the Indian Hot Springs in Idaho Springs. Would you rather stay close to or in the city of Denver? Larimer Square has several fun boutiques for you (and even your pets)! When you’re ready for a break, there are a variety of delicious cafes and restaurants to choose from! So, if you come and attend this class, you may want to extend your stay (or even come early) and take advantage of the most attractive area of the United States.
